What you get

Four things, and only one of them arrives after you are gone.

People come to this for different reasons, and at their own pace. The practice is the same in every case; what it gives back is not.

ONE. CLARITY, NOW

Time in which you actually think.

Most people never stop. Decisions get made, time passes, and the reasoning behind any of it is never examined. Not because it isn't worth examining, but because nothing in an ordinary life creates the occasion.

This creates the occasion, whenever you want it. Something is on your mind, so you say it. Someone asks you what you chose and why, what it cost you, and what would have changed your mind. Answering those questions out loud is not the same as having the thoughts. It is sharper, and it is frequently uncomfortable.

It is the part I would miss if it stopped, before any question of what happens to the record.

TWO. YOUR OWN LIFE, RETURNED

What you noticed comes back to you.

Each week, a short report. Your own entries, the insights that emerge from them, and the questions they leave behind. Nothing generated. Nothing added that you did not say.

Read in one sitting, it does something a single conversation cannot. You see the shape of what you have been living through, and how much of it you would otherwise have let pass unremarked.

Over years it does something else again. It holds your positions as they were alongside your positions as they became, and shows the movement between them. Not to hold you to anything. To let you see whether a change was one you chose.

THREE. A FIXED POINT

Something to check yourself against.

The systems you talk to are becoming more capable, more persuasive, and more constantly present. The risk is not that they will lie to you. It is that they are agreeable, fluent, and always there. And views drift under that pressure without anyone noticing it happen.

A dated record of what you actually held is a fixed point. Not a defence against being wrong. A defence against being moved without knowing you were moved.

Some members want this for reasons of their own. A public position they will be asked about years later, a professional judgement they want to be able to trace. The record does not care which. It holds what you said, and when.

FOUR. WHAT REMAINS

The part that outlives you, and what it can and cannot do.

What your family inherits is not a document and not a simulation of you. It is your reasoning, in your words, with each position traceable to the conversation that produced it and the date you said it.

They can read it, search it, and put questions to it. Where you gave an answer, they get your answer. Where you did not, it tells them so.

That last part matters more than it sounds. Nothing in the record was generated, so nothing can be quietly adjusted to be more agreeable across three generations. Your grandchildren can disagree with you. Which they can only do if what you actually thought is written down.

WHAT THIS ASKS OF YOU

Nothing you have to keep up with.

There is no schedule and nothing to fall behind on. You talk when you have something to say. On WhatsApp, in your own voice. Some people do this most days. Some go quiet for a season and come back. Both are the practice working.

There is nothing to install and nothing to prepare. Send a photograph and talk from there, if that is easier.

The only thing that matters is that you keep returning to it. This is built for a decade, and it is worth what you put into it.
